WANGANUI PLAYER REACHES SEMIFINALS IN WOMEN'S GOLF

Holder Of N.Z. Championship Was Taken To The Nineteenth

PALMERSTON N.. Yesterday (PA). —Attracting the largest gallery yet to follow the game during the New Zealand women’s golf championships at Hokowhitu. Miss E. Wilkinson, holder of the championship title, was taken to the 19th. green by a former champion, Mrs. R. S. Fullerton-Smith, when the quarter-finals were played this morning. The game finished in Miss Wilkinson’s favour, but decision could easily have been reversed when Mrs. Fullerton-Smith went to the 11th. hole 1 up.

As a result of the other quarter-final games. Mrs. G. W. uollis, also a previous titleholder, will meet Miss H. Buchanan in the semi-finals tomorrow, while -Miss Wilkinson’s opponent will be yet another former champion, Mrs. J. Ball. Judging by the form exhibit*! by Mrs. Ball this morning, she is likely io prove an even more difficult aa' versary to Miss Wilkinson than any other player. In a marathon tussle over 22 holes, two Auckland players, Mrs. G. W. Hollis and Mrs. C. N. Jacobsen, fought out a game in which the former was never given an opportunity of taking a generous lead over her opponent, whose steady, straight play was the real obstacle. Mrs. Bail played splendid golf, which won her the NewZealand title at Shirley in 1946, when she accounted for H. Murray, of Miramar, in the quarter-final of the championship and repeated in the afternoon, when her score in the medal round was 78. Results: — Championship Quarter-Finals. Mrs. G. W.
