Wanganui Gun Dog Successes At Wairarapa Fixture

The following Wanganui gun dogs were successful at the recent Wairarapa Grand Prix Gun Dog Trials hold at Masterton, at which competitors were present from all warts of the Dominion: Messrs Izard and Robbies Labrador Champion. Durley Beechtwig (imp.) was first in the water section, Wairarapa all breed championship, and second in the land section. In addition it. was the winner of the aggregate all breed championship and second in the land section. In addition it was the winner of the aggregate all breed championship and fourth in the Grand Prix Prize aggregate. It was also lirst equal in the retriever event and was winner of the Gage and Grey Challenge Cups Mrs. N M Izard’s Labrador Pembroke Appeal was first in the land section. Wairarapa all-breed championships and second in the land section Grand Prix Trials. Messrs. Izard and Robbie Labrador Dual champion Sue of Glenlossie was placed third in the retriever event. Mrs. S. A. Sheaves Gordon setter, Cameron of Craigburn was second in the pointer and trials.

; FORMER MARTONIAN WINS TARANAKI SKI TITLE. ■ Former Martonian, Austin Hay- ' ward, won the Taranaki ski championship held at. Mount Egmont at the week-end. Mrs. Hayward was placed second in the women’s downhill race, her time being 2min. 37sec The men's downhill race resulted in a tie between Hayward and T. McKeon (Taranaki), whose times were both 48 4-ssec. The men's slalom was won by Hayward, his times for the two runs being 55 l-ssec., and 54 1-5 sec., a total of lmin. 49 2-ssec. With 200 points, Hayward was placed first in the aggregate for the slalom an.d downhill events. MINIATURE RIFLE SHOOTING ON MARTON RANGE. The feature of the evening shoot on the Marton Miniature Rifle (?.ub range o\ Monday night was a “possible” off th'e riflle by T. Whale. The Home Guard Cup resulted in a tie between N. Whale and T. Taylor, and the shoot-off has been arranged for next Monday night. Miss A. Rankin won the D grade anonymous trophy. The four members ot the Marton Club who were chosen to shoot in the New Zealand teams match journeyed to Awahuri, their target scores being: H. Coles 99.6, 100.9, 199.15; N. The committee has decided to hold a wind-up social evening in the rifle club hall on Saturday, October 30, when trophies won during the season will be presented. BIRTHDAY AND FLOWER SHOW. The 15th birthday of the Upper Tutaenui branch of the W.D.F.F. was held in the Tutaenui Hall last Thursday, Mrs. G. G. Oliver presiding over a large attendance of members and friends. Visitors from several neighbouring branches were also present. The birthday cake was made by Mrs. Thomson and was sent to ths aged ladies at the Awapuni Home. The main feature of the afternoon was the small flower show and a display of handcraft arranged by the junior members. The latter exhibition was most interesting, some beautiful work being displayed, ranging from toys, knitted garments, supper cloths, to a hearth rug. The apron competition was won by Mrs. K. Coles and the written competition resulted in a tie for Misses S. Poppe, J. Morrison, and P. Vile. The competition for November is i the best pair of slippers suitable for the Polish parcel. Afternoon tea was served by Mesdames Gibbs and Little. PERSONAL. Mr. J. A. F. (“Sandy”) Jackson, in recognition his work in establishing the Martin Miniature Rifle Club Range, was elected a life member at the general meeting of the club on Monday night.

FORMER NAVAL OFFICER ADDRESSES MARTON ROTARIANS Lieutenant R. Harris, D.S.C., formerly a commander of a motor torpedo‘boat in the Royal Navy, but. now assistant engineer to the Rangitikei County Council, addressed the Marton Rotary Club on Monday night on Britain's coastal craft and their role in the last war. Although the small craft were not favoured by the Admiralty prior to the outbreak of the war, said Mr. Harris, their value vas recognised when German craft started operations along the lengthy coastline of occupied Europe. On D-Day and other combined operations the small vessels played their part in keeping sea lanes open, combating E-boats, and providing convoy escorts. Mr. Harris was thanked by Mr. K. A. Williams.
