Silk Only N.Z. Golfer Unbeaten In Australian Championship
Five Others Fail: Glading Put Out By A Novice Player
MELBOURNE, Oct. 12 (Rec. 12.5 am).—Five New Zealanders were defeated today in the second and third rounds of the Australian amateur golf championship at the Metropolitan links. The only bright spot in what otherwise was the dullest and most disappointing- day of the New Zealanders’ Australian tour, was B. M. Silk’s 9 and 8 win over A. C. Bennie, who is almost unknown in championship golf.
The day’s greatest surprise was the 18th. green defeat of R. H. Glading in the second round by T. 11. Kellick who, by comparison with the New Zealander, is a novice. Hornabrook’s defeat was excusable, for he went down to E. G. Routley, who was runner-up to Bobby Brown for 1946 Victorian golf title, and defeated W. A. Edgar in the opening round of this year’s Commonwealth Club championship; Routley finished today’s match four up. G. P. Roberts encountered a superior player in Edgar in the third round and lost 2 and 1, while D. L. Woon unexpectedly crashed against an 18-year-old Tasmanian schoolboy, Peter Toogood. who “stole” victory on the 18th. green by sinking a 12foot putt. Peter is the son of Alf Toogood. the Kingston Beach Club professional. In the fifth match N. H W. Amon lost to W. D. Ackland-Horman, 3 and 2. POOR N.Z. PUTTING. Poor putting put most of the New Zealanders out of the competition. Woon missed six putts of five feet or less and three-putted on both the 10th and 11th greens, while Glading three-putted on five greens. At the I 11th he was stymied and took three | putts from only 10 feet. Hornabrook also took three putts on several greens to throw away his chance of winning Bad putting, in | most cases was caused by the water- j logged state of the greens after' heavy rain; which compelled many players to discard putters in preference for I number four irons. I
Silk probably was the day’s most impressive player. He was out in 34 and after winning his match completed the round to be home in 36 for a total of 70. The course standard scratch score is 76.
