SOCIAL AND PERSONAL. Mrs. Trevor Allan, of Bulls, has returned from Christchurch. Gonvi le Croquet Club Hostesses at the card afternoon of the Gon vi lie Croquet Club yesterday were Mesdames J. Drake * ana F. Wood. The prize winners were Mesdames Loren tzen and Dick. The consolation was won by Mrs. C. Stewart. Y.M.C.A. Ladies’ Auxiliary. The president, Mrs. J. McDougal was in the chair at the September meeting, when there was a fair attendance of members. Reining on the recent annual shop day. Mrs. McDougal thanked members, friends, and the public for their generous support. which, without raffles or competitions, netted over £5O. Clothing and jumble opened up since, will be displosed of later in the year. Tea served by Mrs. Paul and Summerell concuded the meeting. Women’s Chib Members Farewelled. Many members of the Wanganui Women’s Club assembled in the club lounge on Tuesday when a morning tea was given to farewell two popular members, Mrs. Percy Paul and Mrs. Bache Harvey, who are shortly leaving Wanganui. In presenting the guests of honour with gifts from the club, the president. Mi’s. W. E. Wilson, said they had been such wonderfully hard workers and had shown keen interest in all the activities of the club. They would be greatly missed. Mrs. A. R. Gower, convener of the Gardening Circle, in a brief speech, referred to Mrs. Paul's great interest in the circle of which she had been the convener for several years. Good wishes for the future were expressed by the speakers to the honoured guests. Mrs. Bache Harvey, who was a former vice-president, convener for the club bridge and also keenly interested in the Drama Circle activities, is leaving very soon to reside in Hamilton. Mrs. P. Paul is to leave for Auckland next month.

POPE—MOTLEY.—Mr. and Mrs. A. Motley, of Wanganui, have pleasure in announcing the engagement of their only daughter, Joyce, to Vernon, youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Pope, of Wanganui. CAMPBELL LETHBRIDGE.— The engagement is announced of Marv Isobel, youngest daughter of Mr. H. B. Lethbridge, Marton and the late Mrs. Lethbridge, “Pahiko,” Otaki. to Nigel Maurice, second son of Mrs’, and the late Mr. N. A. Campbell, Wanganui.

Women’s Institutes

Kaitoke. Mrs. Shanks presided over a fair attendance of members for the September meeting. A letter was read from the link branch in England. Mrs. Johns read the motto. Mrs. Shanks and Mrs. McKernan were appointed delegates for the council meeting. Mrs. Tinker delighted everyone with her solos. She was presented with a bunch of spring flowers. A presentation was made to Mrs. Cameron on her leaving the district. Two interesting demonstrations, cake icing and making a seagrass stool were followed with keen interest. Members are reminded of the arts display next month. Competitions results were:—Best flower, Mrs. Shanks 1, Mrs. Scott Jnr. 2, Mesdames Hunt and Campbell 3. Three narcissi: Mrs Scott l, e Mrs. Shanks 2. Mrs. Hunt 3. Bunch polyanthus: Mrs. Garner 1, Mrs. Scott jnr. 3. Apron from scraps: Mrs. Lynch 1. Mrs. Garner 2, Mrs. Hodges 3. Girdle scones: Mrs. Walker 1, Miss Aitken 2. KAI IWI BIRTHDAY PARTY The 14th birthday party of the Kai Iwi Women’s Institute was celebrated under ideal weather conditions; and the president, Mrs. Goldsbury, welcomed members and visitors from neighbouring institutes. The hall was beautifully decorated with spring flowers and greenery, and presented a most festive appearance. The programme was most interesting and enjoyed by all present, two vocal solos rendered by Mrs. Yeatman and Miss Nancy Ross were much appreciated, as also was Mrs. Paine’s elocutionary. item. Two amusing competitions, given by Mrs Smith and Miss McCulloch occupied the attention of members. After all had partaken of afternoon tea, the president called on Mrs. Wright, senr., a former member of the institute, to perform the ceremony of lighting the 14 candles on the birthday cake, and Mrs. N. Brunlet t was called upon to extinguish them. Mrs. Williams, of Brunswick, cut the cake, and congratulated the Institute on its birthday and splendid effort. The beautiful cake was the gift of Mrs. Staite, and was artistically iced by Mrs. J. Rountree. Competitions results were: Vase of daffodils, Mrs. E Rountree 1, Mrs. J. Rountree 2! low bowl of mixed flowers, Mrs. E. Rountree 1; baby’s singlet for C.0.R.5.0., Mrs. Clark 1, Mrs. Goldsbury 2, Mrs. Morrison 3. Mrs. Staite concluded the day with a vote of thanks to all who had so kindly helped to make such a happy gathering

METHODIST WOMEN’S MISSIONARY UNION.

There was a very good attendance at the monthly meeting held in the Trinity Church Parlour. The president read a letter from Mrs. Goldie relating varied experiences of life in the Solomon Islands. Letters were also read from the Dominion president and from the Kurahuna Home, both being very interesting. After the business was concluded Mrs. Bates presented the president, secretary, and treasurer with a bouquet of flowers and wished them every success in the coming year. The next meeting will take the form of a social and birthday celebrations.
