SIX FAVOURITES WON ON FINAL DAY AT RICCARTON

(Special to Chronicle.) Christchurch, Aug. 22. Six of the eight events on the concluding day of the Canterbury Jockey Club’s Grand National meeting at Riccarton yesterday were won by the favourite. The only surprise of the day was the success of Carry On in the Redcliffs Handicap, his win being accompanied by a dividend of more than half a century.

popular victories were those 01 Arabian Night in the Lincoln Steeplechase and Boolamskee in the Sydenham Hurdles, the crowd giving both winners warm ovations. The reception was particularly for the riders, L. C. Brown on Arabian Night having been unlucky to lose an iron in the Grand National Steeples, and Mr. E. R. Curtis, on Boolamskee, having again elected to ride the horse himself. | The weather was fine and the track was firm and fast. There was a smaller attendance than on the two previous days. The totalisator handled £134.320 10s, compared with £139,961 on the final day last year. The total for the meeting was £449,946, compared with £447,473 last year. ODDS-ON FAVOURITE Arabian Night, an odds-on favourite, won the Lincoln Sieepiecnase from Bravura and Roman Son alter a keen contest which was marred by a' fatal accident to Hign Morale, who broke his neck when he leil at the last fence when lying about a behind the winner. Whiphand was the early leader but ran oil at the second fence, post and rails near the nine furlongs. Lunaria then took charge and he led for the next. mile. A round from home Exeanor Star was handy to him and Bravura, High Morale, Abbey-Lu and Roman Son headed tne others, with Debater and Arabian Night not far away. The leaders bunched up going to the Kennels double the last time, and from there the race developeu into a match between Arabian Night and High Morale. They were together jumping the second to last fence at the home turn, but Arabian Night took over going to the .ast fence, where High Morale fell. Bravura was still handy but he was unable to bridge the gap to Arabian Night in the run home, the Dunedin candidate winning by three lengths. Roman Son was eight lengths back, third, with a big gap to E.eanor Star, who narrowly beat Lunaria for fourth. Abbey-Lu, Spanish Main and Debater were others to complete the course. Bronze Night’s rider, D. Dawson, broke a’leather and the horse was pulled up before completing the first round. BOOLAMSKEE NARROWLY Boolamskee, runner-up in the Grand National Hurd es, was rewarded when he got up in the last stride to win the Sydennam Hurdles from Pimlico, who looked the best of good things after being two lengths clear of the field at the .ast furlong. Boolamskee was ridden by his owner, Mr E. R. Curtis, and he was given a great 1 cheer by the crowd when his number was hoisted alter a photo-finish. Glad Fox, giving a dashing display : of fast jumping, led for seven furlongs | clear of the field. Going down the back Pedantic joined G.ad Fox in front, and at the six furlongs they ' were four lengths clear of Bay Robe, with Young Bob, Diamond King, 800- ■ lamskee and Pimlico closing on them. ! Half a mile from home Giad Fox and

Pedantic were still on terms in front, about five lengths clear of Pimlico, who was close.y attended by Boolamskee, with Young Bob. Diamond King and Sphere heading the others. Pedantic had the edge on Glad Fox turning for home, but Pimlico soon headed him and jumped the last fence clear. He was two lengths ahead of Boolamskee, Pedantic and Sphere at the last fur.ong, where his? rider was taking matters rather easily. Boolamskee then lodged his challenge and finished with great dash to snatch the verdict by a nose. Sphere came on well for third, four lengths away, and Young Bob was another three lengths back, fourth. Pedantic was fifth and next to finish were Diamond King, whose jumping was uneven, Turf Topic, Glad Fox and Skywriter. Bay Robe, who was handy for a mile and a-half, finished last. BALLINAGH WINS SOLIDLY The main event on the flat, the Heathcote Handicap, was won in attractive style by the favourite, Ballinagh, who was awkwardly placed hall a mile from home but secured an opening soon after passing the false rail, from which point he finished solidly. Siegtone, Broie, Revolte, Aganev and Pageantry were slow to begin. Julius Caesar got away best and led early from Lord Theio, Hormuz, Riverview, Clyde Bridge, Kirkella and Wonder Boy, but at the end of two furlong§ Wonder Boy and C.yde Bridge had raced up to join Julius Caesar, and passing the five furlongs these three were in line from Kirkella, Merry Robin, Dark Arrow, Thornbridge, Riverview and Ballinagh. Julius Caesar, Wonder Boy and Clyde Bridge were together turning into the straight, where Thornbridge, Kirkella, Dark Arrow, Ballinagh and Riverview were heading the others. Julius Caesar dropped his co-pace-makers at the false rail, and reaching the last furlong was challenged by Ballinagh. who had made a sharp run through along the rails. These two had a short struggle and nearing home Ballinagh got the upper hand and drew out to win by a length. Hormuz, showing improvement on his previous form, finished fair.y well for third, two lengths away, and Riverview was close up fourth, just beating Banshee. Kirkella was sixth and after him came Wonder Boy, Graeme, Lord Elgin, Broie and Fine Night. DA VINCI IMPRESSIVELY Da Vinci, the favourite, scored an impressive win in the Selwyn Handicap. Deep Harmony and Magical set a strong pace to the straignt from Verdant, Faultrosa, Connaught, Da Vinci and Fortune’s Smi e. Magical retired soon alter entering the straight and Deep Harmony had charge at. the distance, but Da Vinci came through on the rails and finished brilliantly to win by three lengths. Magnaform, one of the last bunch at the half-mile, a.so finished with a solid run which carried him info second place, a length in front of Deep Harmony. Lovemorn, always handy, | finished a close fourth, and best of the '

others were Fortune’s Smile, SignaOfficer, Special Flight, Haughty Dick (and Verdant. Golden Amber, Signal Officer and Musselman were slow away and Flying Orders reiused to xeave the bar- ' rier. j A feature of the minor events was ■ the impressive wins of Super and ] Pierre in the two divisions of the j-ongoeacn Hack Handicap. These two horses were bracketed on the to- . talisator. Super, an imported horse ! oy xsearco and raced by Mr. A. Chisi holm, drew out to win the first division very easily, and Pierre, after bei ginning slowly in the second division, | rushed through to the front and stay■ed there till the end. He is a fuLj brother to Welcome Guest and looks i like being a good horse. ; Details of results (per Press Association) are:— HUNT CUP STEEPLECHASE (Of £600; about 2£ miles' I 3/3 —Sig ow, 10.8, L.
