Wanganui-Mana watu Golfers’ Good Win Over Hawke’s Bay
(0.C.) Palmerston N., Aug. 22 In bitterly cold weather which affected the standard of play, West Coast golf team (Wanganui and Manawatu combined) representatives defeated a Hawke’s Bay team in both singles and Jour-balls at Hokowhitu, Palmerston North, today. West Coast won nine singles matches and five four-balls, and Hawke s Bay won live singles and two four-balls. Two singles were halved, and one four-ball was shared. B. M. Silk and K. S. Glendinning (W.C.) scraped home on the last three holes for a one-hole victory over the strong Hawke’s Bay pair, H. J. Longstaff and P. L. Peacock. The lastnamed triumphed over Glendinning in the singles by playing consistent rather than spectacular golf, but Silk proved too strong for Longstalf in this event.
Silk played a faultless stick to win six and four, although the Wanganui player suffered some putting lapses. He just missed a two at the 11th, and on the way home took birdies at the Ith and 14th. His seconds were going particularly well. Longstaff played an even game but had little chance. Results of the singles matches (West Coast players being mentioned first) were as follow:

G. Cliff beat H. R. Davis, 2 and 1; C. Cutfield lost to S. E. Murley, 2 and 1; K. S. Glendinning lost to P. L. Peacock, 2 and 1; B. M. Silk beat E. J. Longstafft 6 and 4; J. Burns beat R. Ward halved, with J. Irwin; Dr. F. C. Hutchison lost to D. Sutherland. Four-Balls.
In the four-balls, most games were well fought, and in the instance of Silk and Glendinning, the Bay pair (Longstaff and P. Peacock) led all the way one and two up until the last three holes. At this stage Glendinning. 2 down on the card, pulled behind the pines from the 16lh, used his No. 8 to loft it over the pines to 30ft. from the pin, and sank the 30-footer to hole out in three- a remarkable recovery.
Silk was not at his peak, If.t he was doing well with his irons.’ He look the 17th and finished the 18th all square. They took the last hole. Results of the four-balls (Wes!
