ARGENTINE MEAT
HIGHER PRICE WANTED FROM BRITAIN (Special N.Z.P. A. Correspondent) Recd. 8.20 p.m. London, Aug. 17. Discussing a report from Buenos Aires that Senor Miranda, the Argentine Finance Minister, will demand a further increase in the price of Argentine meat when he arrives in Lon- . don next month, the "Yorkshire Post” advocates that the Chancellor oi the Exchequer (Sir Stafford Cripps) and the Food Minister (Mr. Strachey) should refuse to make any further concessions to Miranda, even at the I risk of losing the one-seventh of the present British meat ration which tire Argentine supplies. "Britain is paying about the same price for meat from Argentine as she is paying to New Zealand,” states the “Post.” “Housewives and butchers will probably agree that there is no comparison in the quality of the meat from the two countries. The quality of Argentine mutton, in particular, is reported to have deteriorated during the past 12 months. We know housewives who are bitterly emphatic on this point.” Pointing out that Argentine economy is already in a serious condition cause of Colonel Peron’s policies, .nd that Mr. Miranda has, therefore, rood reason for trying to obtain hi «. prices, th P newspaper conclud > “Our meat ration certainly is small enough. But even when allowance has been made for Marshall Aid our overseas trad o accounts are badly out of balance. We cannot afford to pay more for our meat than we are paying already, and if Miranda asks for more it might be as well to make it clear to him that we shall have to do without. We must not be fooled by the extortionate Senor Miranda.”
