HARBOUR BOARD TO CONFER WITH CITY ON MATTERS OF POLICY

The suggestion that the board should comer with the council regarding the reopening of the river cnannei between Castleciiff and Wanganui was made to yesterday’s meeting of the Wanganui Harbour Board by the Wanganui City Council, 't he board agreed to the suggestion, and a meeting is to be held at an early date.

The letter stated that the council was interested in having coal ships discharge at the Gas Wharf again. It was suggested the meeting should be held at night in the City Council Chambers.

T'li - retary (Mr. I. Hedditch) said had suggested to the town cle. ,Ir. C. R. Wiiite) that tha mec g should be held when the boaru had some concrete facts regarding the new channel. “I would not like to see this riieeting deiayed. There is something more than the new channel to discuss,” said the Hon. W. J. Rogers, M.L.C. He thought the board and the council should get together as the council had a reasonable case ior wanting to know how the money it found in rates was being expended by the board These rates were becoming higher and higher each year, and he thought- the council should meet, members of the board and discuss the board’s policy for the future . It would be a friendly meeting and no doubt, would strengthen the hands of the board. The chairman (Mr. E. A. Millward) suggested that it might be wise to wait until the board hud something more definite to go on than at the present. In answer to the Hon. W. J. Rogers, he added that the use of a grab from the Public Works Department was hoped to be made available this week, and then a start could be made with the removal of some of the stone from the training wall. However, the board would meet the council at an early date if necessary.

The City Council had difficultides of its own and worries regarding the arranging of its own budget, said Mr. Rogers.

The chairman said that it was proposed to hold a meeting of the Works Committee in town once a month and he suggested that the council representatives might confer at one of these meetings. Mr. Rogers said the council would like to meet a full meeting of the board. He suggested that tiie chairman, the secretary and himself should organise a meeting to be arranged within the next few weeks. Mr Rogers’ suggestion was adopted.
