Harold Logan’s Owner Dies At New Brighton

Private advice was received in Wanganui of the death, at New Brighton yesterday, of Mr. E. F. C. Hinds, who was a keen supporter of the sport of trotting until- his health compelled him to give up active interest. Mr. Hinds owned Harold Logan, probably the greatest public idol in the world of trotting so far as the Dominion is concerned. Mr. Hinds owned and raced other horses, but none of them approached the stature of Harold Logan, who won his first race as a five-year-old in the 1927-28 season in the ownership of Mr. F. R. Legg, and died only last April. It was only when Harold Logan came into the ownership of Miss E. Hinds, at the small outlay of £lOO, that he began to show his real worth. He was nine years old when he won his first New Zealand Cup, and thfc following year he repeated the feat. At 13 years he was third in the New Zealand Cup, setting a world pacing record for two miles, and at 14 years he was fourth in the New Zealand Cup and won another Free-For-All to receive an official farewell such as no other horse has been accorded. Mr. Hinds, an Australian by birth, was interested in motor-cycle racing when he first came to New Zealand, and held many race-riding records. He later acquired interests in the motor business, but in recent years had been farming in Canterbury. His death followed after an attack of double pneumonia.
