Exhausted Hare Endeavours To Swim Heaton Park Lake
Hounds met at the south end of Union Line last week, when the Rangitikei Hunt Club held another successful outing. After drawing two poddocks, hounds found behind Mr. J. Glasgow s house and went away for a good burst to Mclvor’s Road, but they were at fault there and, being unable to make anything of it, put up a fresh hare in Mr. D. Glasgow's. The hounds went away to a screaming scent into Mr. L. Wing’s and on into Mr. Gudopp's, where they streamed away over this beautiful fenced grass and stubble country with the field well thinned out behind them. A swing to the left, near Mr. L. Gudopp’s house, gave those who had ridden that line an advantage, but a check at the main road, allowed a few more to come up with them. The respite, however, was brief. The hare had been viewed down the road. Huntsman Goodwin, holding his hounds forward, hit it off where “puss" had crossed into Heaton Park. The country here was more rolling and, as the pace was still on, even the "thrusters" caught only an occasional glimpse of the hounds as they raced across Mr. J. Simpson’s and through Mr. Holt Simpson’s, skirting his sheep yards and a plantation, the hare obviously heading for cover. This country is tricky to ride. As those in the first flight topped the rise overlooking Heaton Park lake, they could hear the crash of hounds in the cover below, while some 200 yards off shore, the hare was viewed swimming strongly. But the pace had been too hot and when it became obvious that the hare could not make the other shore, a boat was sent out to pick her up. Hounds were taken back to Mr. Glasgow’s and found again near the house, and again the scent was good. They ran through Mr. N. Glasgow’s and circled back through Mr. J. Glasgow’s without a check until they came to the main road. Here they put up a fresh hare which took them back to Union Line, and when they checked there, everyone cried content.
Among those following the hounds were: The huntsman (J. Goodwin) on Silver Fox, the master (F. McLean) on Master Peter. deputy-Masters Q O. Wilson on Gisborne, R. K. Simpson on Venture. Hon. During the drought period dairy stock were being grazed on the “long acre,” but in most cases the cows were under control, reported the traffic inspector, Mr. W. C. Shaw, to a meeting of the Marton Borough Council last night. While this grazing did no direct harm to the roads, it was hoped that stock would be kept off the roads in the winter months as considerable damage was done to the water tables and road shoulders, stated the inspector. “I have personally informed stock owners that action will be taken against them for allowing stock to be grazed on roads within the borough." said Mr Shaw.
