Limitation Of Press Reports On Inquests Sought By B.M.A.

Recd. 9.55 p.m. London, June 30 A conference of the British Medical Association at Cambridge carried a resolution by a large majority urging the Home Secretary to prohibit newspapers from publishing details of inquests into deaths by suicide. Speakers for the resolution said the publication of details of suicide cases often caused a great deal of pain and unnecessary suffering to relatives of those concerned, and occasionally prompted other people with suicidal tendencies to attempt to take their •ives by the methods disclosed. Several speakers said the majority of British newspapers reported suicide (ases with the greatest restraint and discretion, but expressed the view that all that should be published was the fact that an inquest had been held, the name and address of the person concerned, and the verdict that he died by his own hand.
