Waterside Industry To Have Representation On Harbour Boards
(PA.) Parliament Bldgs, June 30. The appointment of additional members of harbour boards so as to give representation to workers in the waterfront industry is provided for in the Harbours Amendment Bill introduced and read a first time in the House of Representatives today. These appointments will be made by the Governor-General. The number of waterfront industry representatives to be appointed to each board will be as follows: Auckland three; Bay of Islands, Bluff, one; Foxton, nil; Gisborne, one, Greymouth one; Havelock, nil; Hokitika, one; Lyttelton, two; Motueka, one; Napier one; Nelson, one; New Plymouth, one; Oamaru one; Otago three; Patea one; Tauranga, one; Timaru, one; Toiaga Bay, one: Wairau, one; Wanganui, one; Wellington, three; Whakatane, one; Whangarei, one. The Minister of Marine (Mr. Hackett) said the Bill also orovided for penalties for th® removal of spoil from beaches, including beaches that were private property. It also authorised the establishment of an appeal board similar to the tramways appeal board, to hear and determine appeals by employees of harbour boards* against dismissals, disratings, fines, or other punishments and also appeals on the ground of promotion being unreasonably withheld.
