(0.C.) Bulls. June 29. Compensation totalling £26,064 lor land taken by the Crown for the settlement of ex-servicemen was claimed by the beneficiaries of the Fraser Estate, Bulls, at a recent sitting in Palmerston North, of the Wellington District Land Sales Committee. Mr- O. N. Campbell presided and associated with him were Messrs. G. A. Hansen and R. E. Downes. , _ „ The land, which is situated near Bulls comprised an area of 1220 acres which was divided into a sheep run of 071 acres, and two dairy farms of 123 acres and 126 acres- The total claim of £26,064 was made up of £25 514 for the land and £550 for millable limber. The price for the timber was ageed to. but the Crown valuation for the land and timber was £21,771. leaving £4293 in dispute. For claimants. Mr. R. Mackay (Bulls) said that the land was offered to the Crown in 1945 for the settlement of servicemen, but the price offered bv the Government was considered insufficient. The Crown later suggested that claimants agree to the Minister giving notice that he intended to take the land for soldier settlement, in which case the question of compensation could be arbitrated before the Land Sales Court. To this suggestion, claimants readily agreed, as their main wish was for the land to be used tor soldiers settlement. The main item contested appeared to be the valuation of fences and buildings, the necessity or otherwise for lime to be used on tlie dairy farms, which comprised warm land, and the productivity of each of the properties. Valuers for claimants were Messrs. O- Monrad and G. G. Wilson. Mr. W. J. Beveridge was the Crown representative, and associated witli him as valuers were Messrs. M. R. Hoe and J. Hill. When the evidence had concluded the Crown decided to accept claimants’ figure for the 971 acres. £11,778. The committee however, reserved its decision as to the compensation for the two di*.ry farms.
