Annual Meeting Of Young Contingent Of Victoria League

There was a good attendance of members at the annual general meeting of the Victoria League Young Contingent, which was held in the League Rooms, Wakefield Chambers, last Thursday night. The president (Miss Jocelyn Turnbull), welcomed the members and presented sprays to the three representatives ot the Senior ‘League present, Mrs. N. R. Bain (patroness). Mrs. J. Hamilton (president) and Mrs. A. H. Boyes (past-president)- The balance-sheet was read by the acting secretary and treasurer. Miss Irma Mackay. The election of officers resulted as follows: —President, Miss J. Turnbull (re-elected), vice-president; Miss P. Drummond (re-elected), hon. secretary and treasurer; Miss M. Murray; committee, Misses M. Burtt, J. Gardiner. Carol Jeffs. I. Mackay, L. M(jPhail, M- McCallum and Joan Turnbull. Each girl brought along two handkerchiefs for inclusion in the contingent's food parcels to England, and, through the generosity of Mrs. Boyes, a very handsome box of crystallised fruit was disposed of. It was announced that a party would shortly be held to augment the league funds. After the business concluded items were given by Misses M. Burtt, H. Collier and J. Gardiner, and Miss June Hansel played for community singing. The evening closed with the serving of supper. The report stated that the membership of the YoungcsContingent shows a total register of 68 girls, of whom 60 are active- This is a decrease of 10 on last year’s total figures, but an increase of 20 in the active membership. “March 1948 saw the completion of 10 years since the revival of the Victoria League Young Contingent in Wanganui” continues the report. Although members have be>>n coming and going we have always remained a happy team. Several mem-•--‘bers have extended hospitality in their own homes to both overseas and Dominion visitors to the city and a number of guests have been entertained at our various club gatherings. This extension of hospitality is, possibly, one of our most suited functions. Last October the contingent commenced holding monthly lunches which suit both the business girls and also some of the country members. Other activities have included several card evenings, tea and picture evenings. which latter proved very popular with the girls. The proceeds of these functions have been added to our “Food For Britain” fund. During the year we sent over 1001 b in weight of f /od parcels to the League Headquarters in London for distribution, and two parcels to an ex-member now resident in England- A cash donation has also been made to the current “Save the Children” Fund. We once again assisted the Y.W.C.A. in their annual street appeal. We express our gratitude to for help they have given us at ail times, and to all who have assisted the Young Contingent. Thanks were expressed to Mrs. N- R. Bain, ex-presi-dent, for the heln and encouragement to the Young Contingent, also to Mrs Hamilton, whose coming denartun from Wanganui is much regretted.
