Marton Railway Beat Wanganui 12-10 In Cascade Cup Rugby
Losing their grip on the game after a half-time lead of 10-3, Wanganui Railway were eventually defeated by Marton Railway in a Cascade Cup Rugby fixture on Spriggens Park yesterday by a margin of 12 points (three unconverted tries and a penalty) to 10 (two converted tries). The two forward packs were fairly even, but the visitors’ backline showed the better combination and thrust. Wanganui did most of the attacking in the first spell. Clarke scoring after 10 minutes of play and Betts crossing for a try shortly after. Both tries were the result of rucking near the Marton line, and both were converted by L- Miller with splendid side-line efforts. Tamati kicked a penalty just on half-time for the visitors to make the score, Wanganui 10. Marton 3. Although their lead appeared secure with half the second spell gone. Wanganui lapsed on defence with 15 minutes to go, and Marton chalked up two quick tries bv Maraku and Taite. Only one point down. Marton held their territorial advantage and Hihira went over for the third unconverted try to give his side the lead at 12-10. Wanganui had a chance to pull the game out of the fire just on full-time when Miller took a free-kick outside the twenty-five. The ball passed over the upright, however, and the match closed with no further score. The teams were:
