R.S.A. To Seek Opinion On 44-Hour Week
(P.A.) Wellington, .lune 25 “That the Dominion executive committee be asked to obtain an expression of opinion from all local associations on the question of increasing working hours to 44 weekly’’ was a remit submitted by the district vicepresident of tine Waikato-King Country branch at the annual conference of the R S.A. Mr. G. H. Thomson (New Plymouth) said the remit was quite unnecessary as there was nothing at present to prevent anyone in New Zealand from working as long as he liked providing the necessary overtime rates were paidM: M McDougall (Franklin) said that a state of emergency is expected in this country while hundreds of returned servicemen could not get housing accommodation. The remit was carried. A Franklin remit asking that the present restrictions imposed by the Reserve Bank on trading banks in respect of advances for rehabilitation be removed was approved. An Auckland delegate said many young returned men did not like dealing with the State Advances Department as it had too many tags. Young importers at present could not get money to land their goods.
