WAVERLEY NOTES

BASKETBALL CLUB (OC.) Waverley, June 25. To raise funds for their heavy travelling expenses, the Waverley Basketball Club have held two social dances which have been Very successful. The last one, which was held on June 10, drew a large crowd of dancers and card enthusiasts. Prizes given for competition was a rooster, won by Mrs. J. McDonald, Kohi; and 10s each from Mrs. Jack Lupton and Mr. E. Tremain. The rooster was won by Mr. Mervyn Jeffries and the £1 note by Mr. Brian Klrslater. Rev. D- V. de Candole, president of the club, thanked all the supporters and the ladies, who so kindly came forward to help the girls with the supper arrangements, He also thanked those who had given prizes. The first senior B match to be held at Waverley was played on June 12, and large crowd of spectators watched it. Afternoon tea was served to the girls after the game, and again the thanks of the club went to the ladies who took over the arrangements for the girls. COMPLIMENTARY EVENING TO MR. R. M. BOYNE. In recognition of his services to the Waverley School, a complimentary evening to Mr- R. M. Boyne was held recently. Mr. Boyne has been a member of the Waverley School Committee for 22 years, and for those 22 years has been chairman. Mr. N. Bromiley, who is now chairman of the committee, speaking of the services Mr. Boyne has rendered, said that it was through his drive and work that the Waverley School got their dental clinic and also the new building. He also said that in 22 years Mr. Boyne had been absent from a committee meeting only once. Mr. S- F. Morris, a former headmaster of the Waverley School, and now headmaster at Foxton, was present and spoke of the help Mr. Boyne had been to him. He also endorsed Mr. Bromiley’s words in the work Mrs. Boyne had done. She was always cheerful and ready to help with all the school functions.

Mr. D. B. Hughes, as a member of the committee, and as chairman of the Waverley Town Board, spoke on behalf of the board and the citizens ot Waverley, and mentioned especially how Mr. Boyne had worked to get the school bus service for the children.

In appreciation of his services to Waverley and the Waverley School, Mr. Bromiley presented Mr. Boyne with a pair of binoculars and Mr. R. E. McGregor, a member of the school committee and the treasurer, presented Mrs. Boyne with a handbag. Mrs. R. Hammond, wife of the secretary of the committee, presented a bouquet to Mrs. Boyne. The new headmaster, Mr. L. Fairbrother, and Mrs. Faifbrother, were * present and Mr- Bromiley welcomed them to Waverley. Mr. E. Morgan, a member ot the School Committee, announced the programme of songs, recitations, and a play by the High School pupils. I’h&ose taking part were: Mrs. P. V Graves, Mrs. J. P. Stewart, Mrs. R. E. McGregor, Miss M- Kelly, Messrs. E. J. Kelly, S. F. Morris, and the play, ‘A Pleasant Change," was acted by Rodney Hughes, Murray Kerr, Don Clark, Kathleen Trudgeon, and Fay Muldrock. Accompanists were Mrs. P. V. Graves, Mrs. N. Bromiley, and Miss S. Mathleson. WAVERLEY DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL NEWS. Miss Cara Hall, a young New Zealand pianist who has just returned from a seco.yl period of study in London, gave a recital for the sc'hoci children recently. Miss Hall gave the children some anecdotes of her experiences in London, In her recital she included Bach. Debaussey, and Chopin- She is to give another recital to the High. School pupils later in the year.
