Early Racing Dates For Next Season
The racing season in New Zealand will end on July 31, on which date there will be two race meetings, that of the Rangitikei Hunt Club at Marton and the Christchurch Hunt Club at Riccarton. Subject to confirmation by the Dates Committee of the New Zealand Racing Conference, the 1948-49 season will be opened on August 7 with the first day of the Canterbury Jockey Club’s Grand National meeting at Riccarton, the fixture extending over August 14 and 21. The chief events on the opening day of the C.J.C. meeting will be the Grand National Steeplechase oi £3500, three miles and a-half, and the one mile Winter Cup of £2OOO. The Grand National Hurdles of £2500, two miles and a-half and 160 yards, will be run on the second day, August 14, and the meeting will conclude on August 21. Other early dates applied for by racing clubs are:—l4. Hawke’s Bay Hunt Club; 21, Pakuranga Hunt Club, Dannevirke Hunt Club, at Hastings, Egmont-Wanganui Hunt Club, at New Plymouth; 28, Taranaki Hunt Club, Foxton Racing Club; September 4 and 11, Wanganui Jockey Club. The light harness sport will also commence its new season on August 7, when the Auckland Trotting Club will stage a matinee meeting at Epsom. Other dates applied for during August are: -14, Thames Trotting Club: 21, Thames Trotting Club; 28, New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club. The second day of the Metropolitan meeting is September 4.
