Phosphate Workers On Ocean Island Strike

Recd. 7.20 p.m. Suva, May 29. The Western Pacific High Commission report that a strike of Gilbertese labour employed by the British Phosphate Commissioners on Ocean Island, involving 1100 men, started on May 1. It was necessary to suspend the remainder of the labour force of 1220 men from work. The men demand higher wages, owing to the increased cost of trade .goods, and want a wage of £lO a I month or repatriation. The Resident Commisioner will visit Ocean Island shortly to attempt re- ' conciliation
