Large Quantifies Of British Coal To Go To Germany
(N.Z.P.A.—Special correspondent.) Recd. 6.45 p.m. London, May 26 Details of an agreement under which Britain wiU shortly begim to export considerable quantities of coal to the British zone of Germany are at present under discussion in London. The scheme, was first put forward in Geneva by the Coal Committee of the Economic Commission for Europe, which pointed out that if Britain could send coal supplies to Germany it would great’y relieve the pressure on the overworked German transport system and generally stimulate German production. The bizonal export and import agency, which will handle the coal, wW pay for it in sterling. This will indirectly trengthen Britain’s dollar position as sterling held by the agency can be converted into dollars when holdings reach a certain amount.
The agreement provides for the shipment of 140,000 tons of gas coal to Germany before the end of September and the provision of large shipments later.
