WAIPOUA FOREST
PRESENT AREA TOO BIG FOR A RESERVE OPINION OF SUB COMMITTEE OI ROYAL SOCIETY OF N.Z. (P.A.) Wellington, May 25. A report on the Waipoua Stale Forest by a sub-committee appointed by the Royal Society of New Zealand considers the area in its present condition to be unsuitable for a reserve. The report was presented at the annual meeting of the society’s council today. The committee was of opinion that the area on difficult terrain would be rarely penetrated by either scientists or the general public. The report suggested decreasing the acreage and controlling the area by forestry management. The reduced area should be of such a size as to contain many different sites for kauri stands, and, at a later date, a further reduction in the area would leave several hundred acres of good timber. The committee proposed that every effort be made to perpetuate and extend stands by forest management.
After several members of the council had opposed the proposals, it was decided to forward the report to member bodies for comment.
