AUSTRALIANS BEAT THE M.C.C. TEAM

INNINGS AND 158 RUNS Recd. 1.30 a.m. London, May 25. The Australian cricketers beat the M.C.C. today by an innings and 158 runs. The M.C.C. team were dismissed in the second innings, after following on, for 205 runs. The M.C.C. team, included four English Test certainties and three probables and it collapsed under the attack of Toshack and Miller yesterday. Marylebone, in the first innings, was routed for 189 in two hours. Hutton alone of the Test certainties showed the selectors reassuring form. His 52 before Toshack claimed his wicket were confidently and fluently compiled with an attractive array of strokes. He gave Barnes a very hard chance off Miller’s bowling before he reached double figures. Edrich. Compton and Yardley were never comfortable. The wicket, after showers at the week-end, was soft and played with variable pace for a short period, but otherwise could not be blamed for the Englishmen’s failure. Miller, in the second innings, again made the breach when Robertson gave Barnes a simple catch. Miller nearly dismissed Hutton in the same over when a catch fell just beyond Hassett's reach. TOSHACK’S REWARD Toshack’s six for 51 in the first innings was a just reward for his best performance of the tour. He made the ball turn and lift disconcertingly. The New Zealander Donnelly was deceived by Toshack’s pace from the pitch. Miller, Johnson, Lindwall and Tallon, with orders to hit out or get out, made a Roman holiday of the 90 minutes before the Australian innings ended this morning. They hit 10 sixers between them. Miller batted for 250 minutes and in all hit 20 fours and three sixers. three sixers off one over from Young. The game ended half an hour early when an appeal against the light was upheld.
