AMERICAN ENGINEERS STRIKE OIL IN GULF OF MEXICO
First Open-Sea Drilling Effort Said To Be Bearing Fruit Received 8.40 p.m. ' NEW YORK, May 24 America’s urgent search for new oil reserves iias driven prospectors to sea with success. Engineers have struck oil eight miles out in the Gulf of Mexico, off the Louisiana coast.
A huge steel platform was built in the sea, rising 60 feet above the water, which is 48 feet deep there. A test bore began last March and has just found oil 7000 feet below tfie gulf floor. The platform is self-con-, tained. It has three decks, containing living quarters, recreation rooms,
offices and machinery. A daily ship service maintains supplies. The project, which was undertaken by a Standard Oil affiliate, is believed to be the first open sea well. It already has cost £372,000. The shallow. Continental shelf continues for upwards of 140 miles out to sea, but engineers say it will not be possible to drill in depths of more than 3000 feet.
