Wanganui Victoria League Annual Meeting

"Of special importance to our League will be the visit to this Dominion early next year, of Their Majesties, the King and Queen and Princess Margaret" stated the annual report of the Wanganui branch of the Victorih League at the annual meeting held yesterday afternoon in Dustin’s Social Room. Their Majesties, the King and Queen and Her Majesty Queen Mary, are Victoria League patrons for the Empire. Presented by the president, Mrs. J. E. Hamilton, who presided, the report showed that the membership stands at 235, With 23 life members. “Thirty seven new members joined the League during the year," continued the report, which recorded a range of activities embracing sewing for the needy children of Britain, support of various appeals, hospitality to a number of overseas visitors. League luncheon parties when guest speakers gave interesting talks, musical evenings, bridge parties, together with bring and buy stalls. Donations included £5O to the Victoria League, London, £6 Us 6d to the Leper Fund and £3 3s to the Girl Guide Association. Three cakes were sent to the Victoria League House, London, for Christmas and five large food parcels have just been sent for the personnel of Headquarters staff. The annual report, and financial statement (which discloses a very satisfactory position) were adopted. “We continue to feel deeply for our kith and kin in the Mother Countryin the difficulties they have still to surmount,” said Mrs. Hamilton after welcoming all present. “We admire their courage in facing these difficulties and we trust that before long they will experience happier and more prosperous days,” she added. Mrs. Hamilton expressed her thanks to the members for their help and cooperation to Mr. Duncan Hatrick for auditing the books and to all who i:ad helped the league in any way. In referring to the death of several members, special mention was made of the late Mrs. H. D. Bates, patroness, whose kindly interest and helpful assistance had been of the greatest value to the league over a long period of years. The president asked all to stand as a mark of respect. Thanks were expressed to Mrs. F. E. Smith, who had acted as secretary since the resignation of Miss W. Norman. Miss Jocelyn Turnbull, president of the Young Contingent of the league read the annual report of the junior members, which revealed a membership of 68, with 14 new members who had joined during the year. Their activities included sending parcels to England, the parcels for the year weighing about a hundred pounds.

Mrs. Hamilton read a cable from the London Victoria League conveying best wishes for the annual meeting and future success of the league. Mrs. N. R. Bain, in moving the adoption of the annual report, paid a warm tribute to Mrs. Hamilton for the successful way she had filled the position and for her outstanding work as president, Mrs. Hamilton was accorded a hearty vote of thanks with acclamation.

The president announced that she regretted that owing to having just received word that her husband is to be transferred to Invercargill and that they would be leaving Wanganui in a few weeks, she could not carry on as president for another year as had been hoped. It was proposed that she carry on until June ano the vice-presidents continue tlie work until a president is appointed. Mrs. A. H. Boyes, who congratulated Miss Turnbull on her report presented sprays to Mrs. Hamilton, Mrs. F. E. Smith and Miss J. Turnbull. The election of officers resulted:—Patroness, Mrs. N. R. Bain; vice-presi-dents, Mesdames F. P. Taiboys, A. H. Boyes, E. W. Merewether, A G Cross and Miss M. Harrison; committee, Mesdames A. G. Cross, S. Burnett, H. C. Jenkins, E. H. L. Bernau, H. H. Christie, J A. Glenn, P. H. Hartland, C. Horne, H. M. Keesing, Murray, C. F. Payne, J. C. Small, F H. Wilkie, Misses M. Harrison, H. Marshall, E. Davis, K. Armstrong; hon. secretary and treasurer, A. F. Stevens; hon. auditor, Mr. Ballingali.

This month’s meeting of the Bonny Glen-South Makirikiri branch of the W.D.F.F. was held at the residence of Mrs. A. Odlin, Fern Flats. Mrs. W. Gow presided over a good attendance. Mrs. Gow and Mrs. Arthur Stantiall were appointed delegates to attend the Provincial annual meeting in Palmerston North on May 27. A screening of moving cine kodak films by Mr. Odlin proved very interesting to members. Afternoon tea brought an enjoyable afternoon to a close with thanks to the hostess.
