Surrey Has Uphill Struggle In Match With Australians

(N.Z.P. A.— Reuter—Copyright.) London, May 10. Surrey, following on 491 runs behind Australia’s first innings total ol 632, is likely to give Australia its third innings victory for the tour in four matches. After Bedser, helped by McMahon, finished off the Australian innings, the Australian bowlers, lun Johnson, Lindwall, and Ring, quickly ran through the Surrey side. They were aided by a crumbling wickel. In Australia’s innings Hqssett, lan Johnson, and Tallon batted well,. Hassett and lan Johnson were associated in a fifth wicket stand of 129. This was the third century partnership of the innings. Only Fishlock batted confidently against the sustained hostility of the Australian attack. He carried his bat for 81 in the first innings, while the other Surrey batsmen made a mediocre 50 between them. Lindwall, bowling faster than in the earlier matches, started Surrey’s downfall with two quick wickets in his opening spell. The wicket was becoming dusty when lan Johnson exploited spin, pace, and flight and finished with the excellent average of five for 53. The attendance was about 20,000. Details: — Australia.
