Comment On Wanganui Women’s Hockey Matches

The following is comment on handicap matches played under the control of the Wanganui Women's Hockey Association last Saturday:— Y.W.C.A. v Kiwi: Although Y.W.A. had a handicap of 2 goals and Kiwis 1 the games ended in a draw at the conclusion of the last and open play. For Kiwis T. Kairimu, centre forward, played well and procured the only goal of the game. W. Matapawa, goal keeper, saved scores being marked up against Kiwis by some excellent saves showing some cool judgment. Y.W.C.A. was ably led by S. Harvey, centre forward and P Nye backed up as becomes a proficient player Nine outs seemed to catch both teams at a disadvantage. Kiwis V T.O.G. (1), .Handicap (3): With both lines of forwards working well this was a hard game. T.O.G: (1) forwards functioned beautifully, play being distributed evenly, both wings getting a lair share of the ball. Both defence were good, particularly T.O.G.’s (1) who did not let the ball through once. Goals for T.0.G.: E. Gray, A. Liddell, E Cromarty Result, plus handicap, T.O.G. (1) 3, Kiwis 1. Y.W.C.A. 2 goals handicap, Katana, 1 handicap: At the conclusion of a hard tussle there was no goal scored. Break aways by both sets of forwards resulted in fast play, to be halted by the defence of both teams. Y.W.C.A. full back, O. Wilkie, and Ratana's full back, A. Wereta were the mainstays for their side. Y.W.C.A- 2, Ratana 1. Katana v T.O.G. (2): T.O.G. (2) with a handicap of 2 goals.to Ratana’s 1 goal, showed improvement, although the final score indicates otherwise. Outstanding for T.O.G. was the defence. Ratana opened their score, R. Tamati netting the ball from a melee and M. Stevens making up the second goal just before half-time. The second half T.O.G. (2) forwards increased the pressure but Ratana defence cleared to N. Stevens, who again scored: Final score, Ratana 4, T.O.G. <2) 2. T.O.G. (1) Scratch Stewarts (3): Stewarts were unfortunate in not being able to field a full team and against tlie T.O.G. (1) forwards this proved a great disadvantage to them. However it was pleasing to the onlooker that Stewart .retained their forward line and kept their positions. E. Gray scored 2 goals for T.O.G. (1) M. Moreland 3, J. Liddell 1, G. Schneider 2. Final score T.O.G. (1) 8 Stewarts 3. Stewarts v T.O.G. (2): Here T.O.G. gained their first win of the season the left inner scoring 3 goals and displaying very good hockey. Stewart defence as mentioned before was at a disadvantage. Both teams would improve by observing the short quick passes of more experienced players. T.O.G. (2) 5. Stewarts 3. , G e n,>rai. It is pleasing to ndte that teams are shuffling into a patterned combination thus improving the standard.
