It was -24 per cent, higher than the 1946 average. The volume of exports in the first quarter of 1948 was 26 per cent, higher than in the same period of 1938. This compared with the economic survey’s forecast of a total for the year of 30 per cent, higher than 1938. Sir Stafford said the programme’s monthly rate of exports for the first quarter, as forecast by the economic survey, was £117,300,000. but Britain actually achieved £117,800,000. This was a very useful measure of achievement.
