BIG U.S. WORLD-WIDE UNIFIED MILITARY AIR SERVICE PLANNED

Recd. 10 p.m. Washington, May 8 Mr. James Forrestal, Defence Secretary, announced today a new worldwide military air transport service would begin operation on June 12, to provide domestic and foreign air transport for all services and Government agencies. The service, which will be known as "mates," will merge the Navy and Air Force transport services and wjll be the first major instance of unification of the United States armed forces. Its routes will total more than 65,000 miles and will stretch round the world via Karachi and the Mediterranean and as far north as the Arctic Circle and as far south as Rio de Janeiro. Mats will have 215 Skymasters and 59 Dakatoa aircraft, and will later use giant cargo planes, which will carry 15 jeeps. Mats will be commanded by MajorGeneral Laurence Kuter.
