COLOURFUL AUTUMN BLOOMS MAKE BRIGHT SHOW AT DRILL HALL

Variety Of Exhibits By Wanganui Chrysanthemum Growers

With record entries and blooms ot a high standard, the Wanganui Horticultural Society’s annual chrysanthemum show was opened in the Drill Hall yesterday, when the judging of the various sections was carried out. The Drill Hall had been transformed into a scene of brilliant colours with the blooms of the chrysanthemums predominating. Autumn tinted leaves and autumn blooms lent strong effect to the colour scheme. The champion bloom in the open section, which also won the award for the champion of champions, was a beautiful chrysanthemum exhibited by Mr. J. F. Moorby. The best bloom in the intermediate classes was exhibited by F. H. Jones, and the best novice bloom by Mrs P. Keeling. Other important awards were:— Best red, J. G. Keeling; best anemone centre single, Miss Kendall; best exhibition single, K. Kitney; best white bloom, K. Kitney. The judges of the chrysanthemums were Mr. A. Gibson (Marton) and Mrs M. Moorby. Mr. P. J. Cox was the judge of the cut flowers and Mrs J. A. Harris (Turakina) judged the decorative classes. Competition in the chrysanthemum classes was very keen and the task of the judges in separating the winners in some of the classes was a difficult matter. The champion blooms have been assembled together on a table and they make a pretty picture. In the centre of the hall is a large exhibit by the Wanganui Women’s Club in whibh autumn tinted leaves, blossoms, fruit, conifer, cacti and foliage of many hues blend to make a fine sight. The decorative section is a good feature of the show and some of the workmanship displayed is both pleasing and artistic.
