A halt in the expansion of cattle herds in England and Wales and a sharp drop in the sheep population are shown by the Ministry of Agriculture’s returns for March. The total of catt'e and calves was 7,068,000, against 7,070,000 a year previouly. The sheep total, excluding young lambs, was 1,944,000, compared with 2,639,000 a year ago. The figure for pigs was more cheerful. Breeding sows reached 215,000, compared with 133,000 a year ago.
