Trade Union Official Objects To Reported Remarks By Mr. Walsh
<P-A.) Dunedin, May 6 A request that statements he j alleged had been made about him at! the Labour Party conference by Mr. F. P. Walsh should be withdrawn] without qualification, as untrue, or' that he should be given an opportun-1 ity before the conference of replying to them, was received by the conference this morning from Mr. A. B. Grant, secretary of the Canterbury Trades Council. Mr. Grant's message read: 'lt has been reported to me that Mr. Walsh stated before the conference that I was a wrecker and an agent of a foreign Power. I request that Mr. Walsh withdraw the statement without qualification as untrue, oi' that I be given an opportunity before the I conference to reply to these untrue allegations. Unless this is done I shall consider it necessary to take further action." The conference issued the following statement to the Press at the luncheon adjournment: "Mr. Walsh, in his report to the conference, did refer to wreckers and agents of a foreign Power, but reference was not made to any particular individual, and certainly was not used during! passing reference to Mr. A. B. Grant."
