U.S. Air Force To Be Expanded To 12,441 Operational Planes

70 GROUPS TO BE ESTABLISHED, COMPARED WITH 270 DURING WAR (N.Z.P.A. —Reuter—Copyright.) Washington, May 2. Congress is expected to approve an expansion of the air force to 70 groups of 12,441 operational aircraft and 502,000 men. The air force’s maximum strength in wartime was 270 groups, with 80,000 planes of all types, including a larger number of transport planes, and 2,411,000 men. The Senate appropriations committee approved on April 29 the provision of 3,198,000,000 dollars to modernise the air force’s existing equipment of 55 groups, and to expand the establishment to 70 groups by 1950, when the yearly cost of maintaining that strength will be about 7,500,000,000 dollars.
