Conspiracy Returned Good Pukekohe Price
(Special) Auckland, May 4. Backers of Conspiracy, winner of the President's Handicap at Pukekohe on Saturday, must have felt gratified at the remarkable dividend which accompanied the success of the Baffles horsea, for they received a double-figure return. Only a week earlier Conspiracy had defeated all but Sylis at Te Aroha, but apparently investors were not prepared to accept that form at face value. This time, however, Conspiracy made no mistake, and his conqueror of the preceding Saturday could do no better than finish fifth.
The President’s Handicap was a good race all the way. True, the field began to string out when White Blaze and Mindora, the pacemakers, began their finishing run half a mile from home, so that they were a couple of lengths clear of Conspiracy and Bedivere. with Tamaito Kino two more lengths back, as they made the home turn.
At the distance it was definitely Conspiracy's race, although he was still fighting off his challengers. The last fifty yards saw him assert himsell by a margin of just over a length. There was a wonderful finish for the other places, Mindora holding on just long enough to get second from White Blaze and Bedivere, noses only separating this trio. Sylis, running on, was fifth, ahead of Dougal, Maid of Sherwood and the false favourite, Tamaiti Kino. Conspiracy won too well for excuses on behalf of the others. The favourite had every chance, getting the run of the race in trailing the leaders all the way, but he finished weakly. The going was not worse than easy and both Tamaiti Kino and Sylis may do better in the mud.
Super Vaals and Rozami shot out to make the pace in the Paerata Handicap, and then when Take-a-Lot came to join them the riding of Super Vaals wisely dropped in behind them. Once in line Super Vaals went to the front and it was only in the last bit that Robin Leigh took him on and finished-so well that the favourite's margin was but a nose. Take-a-Lot, at good odds, weakened into third and Gan jab finished fast into fourth place. Gwen Vaals and Forth Bridge did best of the others. Bonny Pay, Tiger Tan and Grand Tourist were awkwardly placed in the middle stages. BEST OF TWO;YEAR-OLDS The Tuakau Stakes'.a’t the Franklin meeting marked the close of racing for two-year-olds this; season. The results of the two divisions did not alter previous convictions that the best youngsters in the north are Tauloch and Beaufighter, with Chubin •not far behind them, and Coonbridge and Regality also fit" to be classed as really good. A line display of fencing was given by Shepherd’s Ace when., he won the Hack and Hunters' ■'■ Steeplechase at Pukekohe. He was \ always handy, and in the final stages came away to win easily from a big, outsider in the grey gelding Uganda; -the latter jumped but he proved himself a game one.” In this event Shepherd’s Mato. Introduced to ’chasing and he might' have won had he been given a jumping race previously. In the spring Beau Rosa looked like one of the best hacks in commission, for while the tracks were soft and heavy he raced prominently, winning on one occasion in the manner of a good horse. Hdwever, continued racing when the tracks- hardened caused him to lose, form. At the Franklin meeting he came into his own once more, when -he finished resolutely on the outside’ to snatch victory on the post from the consistent and improving Brotefort Prince. The win-price exceeded the ■ quarter-cen-tury mark.
