L. J. Ellis Arrives To Train At Wanganui
Well known throughout the Dominion as trainer and jockey, L. J. Ellis arrived in Wanganui yesterday to make his headquarters in this centre, the change from Riccarton having been made, it is understood, for health reasons. His arrival will be welcomed by racing enthusiasts and should place Wanganui more firmly on the map as an ideal winter training centre. Of recent years Ellis has had a useful string of horses under his care and has won his share of the principal handicaps, including the New Zealand Cup, the Canterbury Cup and the Wellington Cup with Golden Sou-
venir, being in the saddle on each occasion. He also trained Bruce, winner of the 1947 .Wellington Cup and several other good races and probab.y the most promising stayer of recent years. As a rider Ellis has a long string of successes. He was associated with Cuddle when that, great mare- won two Auckland Cups and the New Zealand Cup, and also won the A.R.C. Handicap on King’s Knave, Royal Appellant, and Floodtide, the Great Northern Foal Stakes on Royal Chief, the Great Northern Champagne Stakes on Burnish, the Great Northern Derby on Defaulter, the A.R.C. Royal Stakes on Galilee, the G.N. Guineas on Gallio, the A.R.C. Welcome Stakes on Gaiilee and Protector, G.N. St. Leger on Greek Shepherd, the N.Z. Oaks on Oratrix and Fersen as well as Cuddle and Golden Souvenir, the C.J.C. Stewards' Handicap on Knockfin, the N.Z. Derby on Wild Chase, Royal Chief and Royal Tan, the Canterbury Cup on Sporting Blood, Kinnoull, Defaulter, Royal Chief and Golden Souvenir (dead-heat with Soneril, the Great Easter on Tauramai and Bruce, the Winter Cup on Wino, the Dunedin Cup on Golden Souvenir, the James Hazlett Gold Cup on Paper Slipper, Kindergarten and Golden Souvenir, the Awapuni Gold Cup on Greek Shepherd, the Wellington Cup on Defaulter and Golden Souvenir, and the Wanganui Guineas on Royal Chief. These are only a few of his successes, but now that he has settled in Wanganui Ellis may be well placed to add to his record as trainer and rider.
