440 TELEPHONES PUT OUT OF ACTION (P.A.) Auckland. May 5. Ao electrical fire in the Remuera telephone exchange put 440 telephones in the district out of action on Tuesday afternoon. The fire burnt out intricate wiring of a small section of the exchange equipment, and although workmen have been engaged continuously in repairing the damage the full service is not likely to be restored until Friday. The fire is believed to be the first outbreak in an Auckland telephone exchange. It was caused by a short circuit and was quickly extinguished with chemical equipment by members of the The damage was confined to a very small space, but because of the amount of wiring affected a complete block of 440 telephones was affected.
