Waitotara County Prosecutions For Wandering Stock
Several farmers in the Westmere and Brunswick districts were prosecuted by the Waitotara County Council in the Magistrate’s Court, Wanganui, yesterday, for falling to prevent stock from wandering on the roads. In some cases the defendants stated that they were short of feed during the dry weather. Emma Matilda Burnet, who admitted failing to prevent five heifers from wandering on Brunswick Road on March 26, was convicted and ordered to pay Court costs 10s and solicitor's fee £1 Is. Mr. J. H. Salmon, S.M., commented that defendant was a first offender. Gilbert George Churches pleaded not guilty to a charge of failing to prevent ten cows from wandering on Tayforth Road, and after hearing evidence the magistrate dismissed the Information.
John Goldstone, who admitted a charge in respect of two cows wandering on Western Line, was convicted and ordered to pay Court costs 10s and solicitor's fee £1 Is. A fine of £l, costs 10s and solicitor’s fee £1 Is, was imposed on Ernest Rhodes, charged in respect of 20 cows wandering on Grange Road on March 26. The magistrate said that defendant had written to the Court stating that he had to let the cows out because they were running dry and there was no feed.
