DOIG GOLF CUP WON BY L. WHETTON ON BELMONT COURSE

Competitions for the Doig Howl was played on the Belmont course during the week-end by members of the Wanganui Golf Club. The weather was ideal on both days and some good scoring was turned in. On Saturday afternoon a medal round was played and the 25 best net scorers qualified fcr the two bogey rounds which wer° played yesterday.

Everett 72, F. Hackett 72, S. Irwin 72, V. B. Haworth 73, A. Webster 73, L. Whetton 73, H. F. Christensen 73 J. Wilkie 74, C. M. Gardener 74. G. J. O’Malley 74, F. Wiggins 74, K. Brooks 74, H. T. Cox 74, L Udy 74, G. J. Hussey 74. There was plenty of excitement in the play-off tor the two bogey rounds yesterday. The leading morning scores wer«: F. O. Frances 4 up, S. Irwin 1 up, L. Whetton 1 up. In the afternoon, Francis returned another steady round of all square, but L. Whetton finished very strongly, winning three of the last four holes from bogey to finish up with 3 up for the afternoon and tied with 4 up for the day. In the play-off over three holes, Whetton got birdies at the first and second holes and won the Doig Bowl from Francis, who was second. Third place resulted in a tie between S. Irwin and C. M. Gardener, and Irwin won in the play-off. A special bogey competition for those not in the Doig Bowl, over two bogey rounds, resulted in E. Moss and B. M. Silk tieing with scores of all square on the day. Moss won on the count back. The following are the detailed scores for the Doig Bowl:—L. Whetton, 1 up and 3 up, total 1 up; F. O. Francis, 4 up, square, 4 up; S. Irwin, 1 up, 1 down, all square; C. M. Garden, all square, all square, all square; H. T. Cox, all, square, 1 down, 1 down; E. Gilbert, 1 down, 1 down, 2 down; V. B. Haworth, 2 down, 1 down, 3 down In the bogey match the following were leading scores: E. Moss, 1 up, 1 down; B. M. Silk, 2 up, 2 down; F. C. Hutchison, 1 down, 2 down. B M. Silk, New Zealand amateur championing, is continuing to play good golf, and during the week-end handed in two cards of 69. Laurie Whetton, who has also been playing sound golf this season, played particularly good rounds during the week-end and had his handicap of five reduced to three.

On Saturday night a club dinner was held in the clubhouse and was well attended. After dinner a quiz on the rules of golf proved both interesting and instructive.
