HUNTERVILLE NEWS

TOWN BOARD MEETING (0.C.) Hunterville, April 11. The monthly meeting of the Hunterville Town Board was held on Monday night. Present: Cmrs. R. A. Gordon (chairman), J. Hallwood, C. K. Hill, J. Klue, G. Meads, and G. Taylor, an apology was received from Cmr. Dillon. A discussion took place regarding the cutting of willows on the creek in Mrs. McEvedy's property. On the motion of Cmrs. Taylor and Klue, it was decided that the matter be left to the works committee to attend to, as was a request from the Railway Department regarding the topping of trees, which were obscuring the signal at the station.

An application from Dalgety and Co. that water be laid on to their paddocks was granted, provided the company pays all the costs. Cmr. Klue reported that the tin lining of the culvert which ran alongside his shop was causing an obstruction because of rust. Cmr. Taylor also drew attention to the state of the footpath in Main Street. It was left to the works committee to attend to these matters. The financial statement was read, showing a credit balance of £470 12s 3d, March 31 being the end of the financial year. DOMAIN BOARD.

A deputation of the Hunterville Football Club, Messrs. England, Jackson and Holden, waited on the Domain Board for the purpose of discussing the showers which the Footbal Club wishes to Install this present season. Mr. England outlined a proposal for the erection of the showers in the dressing sheds at the swimming baths, and the installation of a hot water boiler. Mr. England stated that the club would erect the showers at no cost to the board and that the club would take full charge, and be responsible for the care of the buildings and baths while they had the use of them.

On the motion of Mr. Klue and Mr. J. Hallwood, the request to install showers at the baths was granted, provided that the Football Club exercises strict supervision and is responsible for any damage done to the premises. It was also decided that the proposal be placed before the president of the Swimming Club. Applications from the Rugby Union and Hockey Club, for use of the Domain for the coming season were approved. A report that two recently repaired doors on the grandstand had been damaged was received. On the motion of Mr. Taylor and Klue, it was decided that the Cricket Club be asked to repair the damage. SCHOOL COMMITTEE. The monthly meeting of the School Committee was held on Wednesday evening, Mr. A. W. Baxter presiding. Present: G. S. Harre, H. Hare, S. C. Coleman, J. McAlley, C. M. Wallis and the Headmaster, Mr. Hamlyn. An apology was received from Mr. G. S. Crichton. A letter was received from the Education Board’s architect giving the cost of resealing the play-ground. The School Committee’s share being £176. The chairman stated that the work was to be gone on with, and that some of the material had already arrived. It was suggested that a function be held on Thursday, May 6, for the presentation of various certificates and trophies to the school children, and that a musical programme be supplied by the children on the motion of Messrs. McAlley and Sextus, it was decided to procure a gold badge for the Dux of the school, to be presented with the certificate. It was also decided that badges be procured for prefects. The house-holders' meeting to elect a committee is to be held on Monday, April 26. This will be followed by the showing of films. The chairman said he hoped that the parents and the public would show their interest by attending them meeting. Nominations close on Monday, April 19.

In his report the headmaster stated that Mr. Prince had resigned as first assistant to take up duties as headmaster of the Ohingaiti School. Several farewell functions had been held at the school and presentations made by teachers and pupils to Mr. and Mrs. Prince. Advice that Mr. K. Cavanagh would relieve Mr. Prince was received. RE-SEALING OF PLAYGROUND.

At the School Committee meeting, a discussion took place on the raising of funds to meet the payments for resealing the school playground. Last year tentative arrangements were made to hold functions to enable the money to be raised, but on account of the health restrictions these schemes had to be abandoned. It has now been decided to make a direct appeal to the parents and the public. The amount needed, as stated previously, is in the vicinity of £177.
