FUNERAL PACE WAS SET IN AWAPUNI GOLD CUP

Manawatu Sires' Produce Stakes Won By Outsider Joyful Lady

Backers had a number of reverses at Awapuni on Saturday, when the Manawatu Racing Club’s autumn meeting was concluded, only one favourite being successful, and the aay was marked by double-figure win dividends in five of the events, topped by Joyful Lady’s near-century return in the Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes. Emerge and Langspiel, respective winners of the Tamatete and Longburn Handicaps, main open events, were at long odds, and even the Awapuni Gold Cup winner, Voltaic, was only third fancy in a field of four, carrying only a little more than a third of the amount invested on the favourite, King’s Ransom.

Feature of the day’s racing was the remarkably slow pace in the early stages of the Awapuni Gold Cup, which brought about the defeat of King’s Ransom in the slow time of 2.15. The field went at half-pace for the first half-mile, taking 31 l-ssec. for the two furlongs and 61 3-ssec. for the four, whereas when the pace was clapped on they ran the last, five in 60 3-ssec. and the last three in 35sec. In striking contrast, Emerge won the Tamatete Handicap over the same distance in 2min. 4 l-ssec., nearly llsec. faster. Weather conditions were excellent, the day being fine but overcast, and the track was again in splendid order and fast. The attendance was up to first-day figures, in spite of counterattractions. and the totalisator handled £75,286, compared with £86,440 10s on the corresponding day of the 1947 meeting, making the aggregate £135,455, a decrease of £27,766 when compared with last year’s £163,221. Under the circumstances, with the day’s big dividends, the turnover was very satisfactory. AWAPUNI GOLD CUP The defection of Yasda and Square Dink left a field of four in the weight-for-age Awapuni Gold Cup, and King’s Ransom was a hot favourite, carrying £2382 10s as against £B6l on Voltaic. It was a battle of tactics, King’s Ransom being held in restraint while Langue d’Or cantered along in front, with Robin’s Reward and Vo.taic a couple of lengths behind the favourite. Robin’s Reward ran up to be a length behind Langue d’Or at the five furlongs, and Voltaic made a forward move to range up on the outside of the favourite, who was pocketed at rthe three furlongs. Voltaic shot past the leaders as they straightened up and sprinted for the judge. King’s Ransom set off after him as soon as he could get clear, but just failed by a nose. Two lengths back Langue d’Or beat Robin's Reward by a nose for third place. CLASSIC SURPRISE Ranking only 12/13 in the betting on the Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes, the Hastings-trained Lo Zingaro filly Joyful Lady brought off the biggest surprise in the history of the juveniles’ classic when she outstayed Royal Shar over the final stages. Royal Shar jumped out 'smartly but

was headed by Air Belle at the end of a furlong and the pair were followed along the back by Fighting Fox, Blue Spec, Blue Seal, Barlous and Vadoz. At the aalf-mile the order was little changed, with Joyful Lady about nine places back, but Royal Shar headed Air Belle into the straight, with Leyma handy, ahead of Blue Spec nd* Blue Seal. Inside the distance Joyful Lady came with a powerful run which enabled her to beat Royal Shar by half a length. Air Belle, two lengths back, was just ahead of Blue Seal and Wembley, with Leyma, Blue Spec and Aki Aki next. EMERGE SURPRISES Selas, favourite for the Tamatete Handicap, failed to show up at any stage, and in a blanket finish Emerge get tne verdict over the well-backed Atomic and the little-fancied Embrolita, returning nearly a score. Sun Burn ran to the front in the first furlong and down the back was two lengths clear of Embrolita, Lady Delight, Dark Arrow, Atomic, Emerge and Theiolyn. At the half-mile Emerge had moved up to follow Sun Burn and Atomic, and turning for home the leaders were bunched, Sun Burn, Atomic, Emerge, Swift Quarry Embrolita and Rothnic being in the picture. Then Atomic and Emerge commenced to assert themselves and Embrolita joined in, with Rothnic making a run on the inside, the quartet, with Sun Burn, going over the line together, with noses and halfheads separating them. Rothnic was fourth, just in front of Sun Burn, and then came Swfu Quarry, Theiolyn, Selas and Gay Stroller. SMART LANG BI AN FILLY Ridden by the apprentice J. Moore, who had piloted Emerge, the srAart Lang Bian filly Langspiel scored a decisive win in the Longburn Handicap to return more than a quarter of a century. Racing down to the halfmile Petre Mar was the pacemaker, with The Pagan, Cressida, Langspiel, Mesalliance, Peter Theio and Argumentative in close order. Petre Mar and The Pagan were almost on terms on the home turn, and Cressida, Langspiel, Mesalliance and Baruch were also prominent. In the run to the judge Baruch took command but was cut down by Langspiel, who won by a length. The Pagan was only a short neck away, a neck in front of Petre Mar. Then came Sea Fury, Cressida, Mercian Lad and Peter Theio. WON AT FIR3r START Having his first stait in a race. Result, a chestnut gelding by The Bigot from the Nigger Minstrel mare Yola, carried the colours of Mr. T. A. Duncan to victory in the Karere Hurdles. Dark Victory and Master Gary shared the lead with a mile to go, with Craven, Phalaria, Royal Sward, Gyration, Imperial Crown and Result following in that order. Gyration had run up to Master Gary at the half-mile but Result quickly ran past them to lead into the straight from Royal Sward, Master Gary, Dark Victory, Gyration and Imperial Crown. Over the con- , eluding stages Result held off Imperial Crown by a length, with Royal Sward a neck away, third, in front of Master Gary, Gyration and Craven. trial plate to gratuity An each-way favourite after her first-day display. Gratuity scored an easy win in the Trial Plate and was followed home by one of the outsiders, Silver Mascot, and the Wanganuiowned Bouton d’Or. Silver Mascot

and Electron shared the pacemaking, with Gratuity, Gay Fellow, Ensign and Bouton d’Or prominent among the remainder. Gratuity took over three furlongs from home and was never afterwards in danger, winning by two lengths from Silver Mascot, with a similar distance to Bouton d Or. Battle Strife, Lajani and Coronara were bunched behind the placegetters. ONE FOR TRAFALGAR DAY G. R. Tattersail, who had piloted Voltaic to victory in the Gold Cup, also won the succeeding event, the Weedhey Handicap, on the Beaulivre gelding Trafalgar Day, who downed the well-backed Indian Song. Indian Song and Trafalgar Day were always prominent, Trafalgar Day taking over the lead at the five furlongs from Indian Song, with Oban, Martianalr, Batley and Nighthena handy. Swift Robin ran up to challenge the leaders crossing the top, but in the run to the judge Trafalgar Day held on just too well for Indian Song, with Swift Robin a length away. Next were Gay Stitches, Lady Oratory, Batley and Oban. VICTORY DAWN ALL THE WAY

Victory Dawn led practically all the way in the concluding event, the Te Matai Handicap, to win and return over a score. He was followed past the mile by Conceal, Go.den Hope, Dickens, Lackamor and White Cliffs, and down the back he streaked away to hold a lead of half a dozen lengths at one stage. Into the straight he was ‘well clear of Conceal, Golden Hope, Mine Host, Gay Sport and Lord Holland. Victory Dawn ran on to win by three lengths from Field Marshal, who came from the rear to beat Sergeant Jack by half a length for second place. Gay Sport was a close fourth, ahead of Lord Holland, Mine Host and White Cliffs. i Details of results:— KARERE HACK HURDLES (Of £4oo* 1 mile 5 furlongs) 2/2— Result, car. 9.3, A. G.
