GLADING BEATS SILK IN FIRST ROUND OF MANAWATU GOLF TOURNEY
(P.A.) Palmerston N., March 29. The Manawatu Golf Club’s threeday Easter open tournament which began in ideal weather on Saturday and was continued In a strong wind, attracted 105 entries, representing districts from Invercargill to North Auckland. The Easter open championship resulted in a tie between J. Watt, the unattached Wellington professional, and W. Allbon, the Auckland unattached professional, both of whom returned an aggregate of 142 for the two qualifying rounds played on Saturday. Their totals were four under par. J. Weir, professional from Grange, North Auckland, was third with 143.
The first amateur was E. J. Austin (Manawatu) with 144, who won on the count back from D. H. Graham (Heretaunga), who also returned 144. Last year’s national amateur champion, B. M. Silk (Belmont) was third with 145. A highlight in yesterday’s first round match play for the Easter Cup was the deteat of Silk by the New Zealand open champion, R. H. Glading, at the 19th, after Silk had missed a 15-inch putt. Pax Smith (Akarana) left his run too late. In match play yesterday in the No. 1 Group he went round in 70 and 72, equalling the best aggregate in the qualifying play the previous da>. A. R. Kitto finished 13th in the Easter Cup with 76-74-150. In the first round he was defeated by K. S. Glendinning at the 19th. F. C. Hutchison finished second in the Easter Plate with 77-77-154.
