Youths Trapped On Island In Waiau River
(P.A.) Christchurch, March 29 Two Christchurch youths trapped on an island in the middle of the Waiau River, near Hanmer yesterday, had to stand by helplessly while raging flood waters threatened to engulf them. The flood encircled the island with the speed of a tidal wave. Rocket equipment was used in an attempt to reach the youths who were in grave danger of being swept away. Just when the rescuers were beginning to despair the torrent receded.
The youths, Peter Maxwell, aged 20, Uen Smith, 20, were rescued from the islhnd this morning by two deerstalkers on horses. They were considerably shaken and were beginning to feel the effects of exposure. They had been in danger for fully twelve hours. They were taken to Queen Mary Hospital, at Hanmer Springs, for medical attention.
