KAEIIHI EWE FAIR A GOOD CLEARANCE

A full yarding of 25,000 breeding ewes was yarded at the Raetihi ewe fair conducted by Freeman R. Jackson and Co., Ltd., last week. Buyers were present in large numbers from the Waikato, 10,000 ewes going to this area. One consignment of 20 railway wagons went to the Stratford district. Good co-operation from the Railways Department resulted in the quick despatch of slock, and this was greatly appreciated by buyers. The sale was much the same as in other centres. The continued dry weather made it a slow and sticky one, and although vendors’ realisations were in some instances hardly up to their expectations, they at the conclusion of the sale expressed themselves as quite pleased and satisfied with the result.

The outstanding sale was for a pen of 408 2-tooth ewes bred by Mr. R. Lilburn, Ore Ore, on country 2000 ft. above sea level—a really first-class line, which sold at what is believed to be a New Zealand record for hillbred 2-tooth ewes at £2 18s 6d, to Mr. P. J. Wright, Raetihi, a keen Waikato bidder being the under bidder. Many other lots were between 45s and 50s, Kainiri Station (Mr. H. T. Minogue) draft of 562 selling at 50s and Mrs. C. E. Fulton’s Estate draft of 329 making 53s 3d. The young ewes generally showed quite a good rise on last year and the quality generally was well up to the high standard of past years. The four and five-year-ewes (there were not many four-year) hardly enjoyed the keen selling of the younger sheep, and realisations were from about Is to as high as 10s advance on last season, but the average rise would be between 3s and 4s. Top price for 5-year-olds was on account H. T. Minogue, Kainut Station, for 500 excellent ewes at 375, Mr. Walter Wilson's draft selling at 365, many lots making better than 325. Top price in this section last year was 32s 6d. Two-tooth Ewes.—A/c Robert Lilburn, 58s 6d; a/c C. E. Fulton Estate, 53s 3d; a/c Kainui Station (H. T. Minogue) £2 10s; a/c Fred McNie, 475; a/c J. R.
