RANGITIKEI OPEN WELL AGAINST TOURING FIJIAN CRICKETERS

(0.C.) Marton. Feb. 24 Rangitikei made a good start in the cricket match against the touring Fijian team which opened a two-day engagement at Marton this afternoon, and when stumps were drawn at 6.15 p.m. had lost six wickets for 142 runs, scored in 165 minutes. In the last 75 minutes of play the rate of scoring decreased appreciably and in this period Rangitikei lost four wickets for a meagre 48 runs. Snow, the visiting captain, wrung on the bowling changes at frequent intervals and in three hours of play employed seven bowlers. There were numerous appeals for l.b.w. but all were disallowed. The afternoon was fine, but cool, the outfield being very fast. The match will be continued at 10.30 in the morning. John Marshall won the toss for Rangitikei and elected to bat on an easy wicket. He sent his two younger brothers, Peter and John to open the innings to face the bowling of Tevita, a left-hander, from the southern end and Gosling, who operated at the northern end. The first scoring shot was a four delightfully cut past point by P. Marshall oft Gosling's first over. With the score at 22, Aria replaced Tevita whose first four overs were maidens. The score mounted in fours and singles and at 35 Snow gave Fenn, a slow spin bowler the ball, who took over from Gosling. A four to the square-leg boundary by A. B. Marshall brought 50 up scored in the good time of 45 minutes. Two runs later A. Marshall skied a ball to square leg off Aria and was dropped by Mosese. Shortly after P. Marshall was snapped up at short leg by Petero. Marshall’s 21 included four fours.

Monk joined A. Marshall and Snow made the fifth change when he came on to take over from Aria and when the tea adjoun ment was taken at 4.30 p.m. the score was 83 scored in equal time. Marshall was 41 and Monk 15. On resuming two new bowlers took up the attack Cakobau at the south end and Apted from the north. The former was given only one over before being relieved by Fenn whose second over saw Monk brilliantly caught at square leg for 22. Cakobau came on at the northern end and his second ball Marshall despatched to the boundary to hoist the century obtained in 103 minutes. Three balls later Cakobau shattered Marshall’s wicket. The outgoing batsman had given a good display for his 48, scored in 103 minutes. Seven fours were included in his tally. The scoring slackened considerably, with John Marshall and McCarthy at the wickets. Fenn kept both batsmen quiet having four men close in on the leg and two near the boundary.

With the score at 127 McCarthy was brilliantly taken at short leg by Apted and 11 runs later Cakobau penetrated Marshall’s defence. In the last over of the day. Rangitikei lost another wicket when Whittle was caught In slips. When stumps were drawn at 6.15 p.m. the score was 142 for six wickets. DetailsRANGITIKEI First Innings. P. L.
