Buoyant Market At Stortford Lodge

(P.A.) Hastings, Feb. 4. Influenced by the rain buyers of store sheep at Stortford Lodge today bid up strongly and the market for lambs was even firmer than last week’s 'good sale. Once more lambs dominated in the yarding of 12,900 head, a large number of them being tail-end lots suitable only for carrying over. For these the inquiry was steady on a buoyant level. The few wethers on offer sold well. What ewes came forward were merely fattening propositions. Ton price for woolly wether lambs was 31s 6d. Other good woolly lines were traded at 28s 5d to 29s 4d, smaller bringing 24s to 25s 7d. Good shorn wether lambs changed hands at 28s, smaller making 24s 4d to 25s Id. Small to medium ewe lambs off the shears sold at 25s 2d to 27s 9d and similar woolly ewe lambs 27s Id to 29s 3d. Small Down cross lambs realised 23s 7d.

Cattle were scarce generally. There were no stores. Apart from a jew dairy beasts only 65 head of fat cattle came forward. Quality was not particularly featured, but with the short entry the demand was good lor handy-weight beef. Values were firmer, with heifers up to 60s per 1001 b. and ox at 555. Medium ex realised £l7 3s 6d to £lB 3s 6d, lightweight QX. £l3 18s 6d to £l6 18s 6d, heavy heifers to £l7 Is 6d, prime to £l5 16s, unfinished £l2 13s 6d. The only cows offered were ex-dairy sorts, selling from £5 Ils to £lO 13s 6d. Vealers sold at £2 14s 6d to £3 13s 6d.

Faced with a short yarding operators were responsible for a firm market in the fat sheep section. Wethers, in short supply, sold from 36s 7d to 39s Id, prime ewes 28s to 30s 7d, others 23s 7d to 26s 4d, Down cross 33s 7d to 34s Id. Good lambs sold at 35s lOd to 37s Id and lighter from 29s 4d to 32s lOd. MARTON SALE The New Zealand Farmers’ Co-op. Distributing Co. Ltd, report on the Marton sale held on February 3 as follows: "We yarded 1034 sheep. Competition was keen, buyers being present from the Taranaki, Waikato, and Manawatu districts. Prices:— “A/c A. J. Dalziell-Kernohan, 1 Southdown ram, 13igns.; 4 S.D. ram lambs, 2gns; 3 at 2igns; 14 m a. S.D. ewes at 2gns; 12 4th S.D. ewes at 25gns; 8 S.D. ewe lambs at 235. Weaner pigs: £2 to £2 17s.
