VETERINARY SURGEONS MAY BE TRAINED IN N.Z. IN THE FUTURE
(P.A.) Christchurch, Feb- 3. It was advantageous to train veterinary surgeons at Sydney at present, but he hoped that eventually a veterinary school would be attached to one of the New Zealand agricultural colleges, said the Minister of Labour (Mr. McLagan), opening the annual conference of the Veterinary Association at Canterbury Agricultural College, Lincoln, to-day. Mr. McLagan said that 71 New Zealanders were in training at Sydney last year, including 29 with rehabilitation assistance. At the end of the year 14/returned fully qualified to begin practice. New Zealand fortunately had been remarkably free from major animal plagues, largely because of the efficient service given by veterinarians. An efficient veterinary service was important in maintaining, not only production, but also quality. Mr. H- S. S. Kyle, chairman of the College Board of Governors, who is a veterinary surgeon himself, also welcomed the visitors to the conference. He said it was the first annual conference of the association to be held in the South Island.
