Mr. J. L. Barriball, of Hastings, is visiting Wanganui and was a guest at the weekly meeting of the Rotary Club yesterday. When residing in Wanganui Mr. Barriball Was manager of the local branch of the National Bank of New Zealand.

Mr. W. I. Gardiner, who was recently engineer to the Waitotara County Council, commenced his duties this week. He fills the vacancy caused by the retirement of Mr. Thomas Dix, who was engineer to the council for more than 28 years.

Mr. A. R. Donaldson, a former president of the Wanganui Rotary Club, and foundation member, who recently resigned, has oeen made an honorary member of the club. Mention of his excellent service to the club was made by the president, Dr. G. H. Robertson, at the weekly meeting yesterday.

The Rev. Brother Philip, an old boy of the Wanganui Marlst Brothers’ School, has been appointed to the South African Province of the Marist Brothers. A former director of the Marist schools in Thorndon (Wellington), Vermont Street (Auckland) and Christchurch, he is at present visiting Wanganui before his departure overseas.

. Blakeley, A.M.1.E.E., A.M.N.Z.1.E., has been appointed resident electrical engineer for the Nelson district with headquarters in Nelson. For the past eight years he has been in the main office of the State Hydro Electrical Department, Wellington. He is the only son of Mr. and. Mrs. George Blakeley, of Wanganui Mr. Blakeley, Jnr., is an old boy of the Wanganui Technical College.

Sergeant W. Tumilty, Wanganui, who i» under transfer to the post of charge sergeant at Port Ahurlrl, Napier, is being replaced in Wanganui by Sergeant L. Nicol, of the Taranaki Street police station. In recent months, Sergeant Tumilty has been acting senior-sergeant in the absence of Senior-Sergeant F. Culloty, who has been indisposed and who recently underwent an operation in Wellington.

Mr. M. H. Holcroft has resigned from the position of editor of the Southland Times and has intimated he is leaving journalism to devote himself more fully to his work as a writer. Mr. Holcroft joined the editorial staff of the Southland Times 11 years ago as a leader writer. He was acting editor for three years during the war, and at the end of 1945, on Mr. R. G. Lund’s return from active service, he became associate editor. He was appointed editor in November 1946, when Mr. Lund took up the appointment as New Zealand representative on the International Wool Secretariat- Mr. Holcroft is the author of seven books, three of which have brought him literary awards.— (P.A.).
