AWAPUNI CANDIDATES FOR WANGANUI

(Special) Palmerston N-, Feb. 3. Weziganui Cup candidates in Gay Stroller, Langue d’Or, and Yasda provided the feature gallops on the Awapuni tracks this morning, when most of the Awapuni-trained horses engaged at the Wanganui Centennial Cup meeting were given their semifinal work-outs. Most of the fast work was done on the plough, though the outside of the course proper was also available. Some useful trials were witnessed before light rain set in. This will be welcomed by trainers as it should prove beneficial to the tracks. Without being kicked out Langue d’Or (G. R. Tattersall) and Yasda (W. J. Broughton) accomplished a useful task over a mile, registering 1.48 for the full distance. Covering the first three furlongs in 41sec., they registered 1-7 for the five and came home the last three in 41sec. Both are very well and have benefited by the racing at Trentham. The Manawatu Cup winner, Gay Stroller, with Broughton in the saddle, was clocked over a mile in 1.45, doing it nicely. Covering the first three furlongs in 37sec., he left the five behind in 1.41 1-5, and came home over the last three in a tick under 41. Gay Stroller appears well and is working at the top of his form. Flare Path, who is engaged in the hack sprint, the Petre Hack Handicap, on Saturday, has taken no harm from his recent outings. Ridden by Broughton, he covered five furlongs in 1.6, and was doing it nicelyCherry Lass (R. Saunders) and Coronara (Tattersall) also took 1.6 over five furlongs, and Czarina (S. Waddell) worked freely over a similar distance in a shade under 1.7. Gay Fellow (F. Cleaver) appeared to better advantage than Afton Water (B. Boreham) over half-a-male, registering 52 4-ssec. Gay Fellow is engaged in the Kai Iwi Maiden on Saturday and should give a good account of himself. Beth Meteorina (J. W- Harris) and Argumentative (J. Hely) worked pleasingly over five furlongs in 1.4 4-5. It was a good gallop. Meteorina will probably run on the second day of the meeting, and Argumentative is engaged in the Flying Handicap. Lady Minter and Good Music, two Kai Iwi Maiden candidates, ran over five furlongs in 1.7 3-5. Specialist, who appears improved, slipped over five furlongs in 1.6, and did it well, with W. L. Aitken in the saddleRothnic (L. J. Clutterbuck) finished clear of Commercial (Harris) at the conclusion of seven furlongs in 1.33, the last three taking 41sec. Commercial is not a good track worker. Lady Barrington (Tattersall) took 1.7 2-5 for the five furlongs. On the course proper Honey Dew and Ngarobi, two candidates for the Springvale Juvenile, ran an easy five furlongs in 1.9. Two hurdlers, Glen Urquhart (Clutterbuck) and Sten (Aitken) were paired over seven furlongs, which they left behind in 1.37, the last three in 44 4-ssec.

Another hurdler in Top Sail (Rout) galloped seven furlongs in 1-36, the iast three in 41 2-ssec. Fairhome (Waddell) was schooled down the chute and shaped well for a novice. Tribute (Cleaver) was jumped once round over five hurdles and gave a pleasing exhibition. Tudor Chief (Gray) was also schooled and gave his usual good display, having lost none of his confidence.

Tremello has finished racing for the present and was turned out yesterday for a good spell. Gyration (Temperton) a recent addition to the team of E. Temperton, was schooled once round over the inside steeplechase fences. He gave a very pleasing exhibition for a novice and has some aptitude for the game.
