S. CANTERBURY WINS SECOND RACE OF SANDERS CUP SERIES
(P.A.) Dunedin, Feb. 3. Sailing through to the weather of Wellington’s Fantasy on the run In the third round of the triangular course in the second Sanders Cup race this morning, South Canterbury's Gallina, sailed by H. H. Kingham, ended a protracted duel between the two boats by taking the lead. The wind up to this stage of the race had been a light south-east that barely kept the fleet of eight contenders sailing, but when it freshened to a full-sail breeze and backed more into the east as the boats were making the final run before gybing into a short beat up to the finishing mark, the three-man crews were hard put to it to keep their craft upright. Gallina, however, was kept particularly steady in this critical stage of the race and crossed the finishing line for a popular win Imin. 4sec. ahead of Auckland’s Bettina (S. A. Mason). This sudden freshening and veering of the wind changed the complexion of the race for a number of boats. It enabled North Auckland and Wellington to out-sail Otago, which had been lying handily in second place 50sec. behind South Canterbury at the final leeward mark. Boats which were astern of these four were also brought Into position to challenge the leaders. Bettina (S. A. Mason) crossed the finishing line 43sec. ahead of Wellingtn’s Fantasy (P. W. Millar), with Otago's Nancy (C. Pettit) fourth, Imin. 52sec. later. Canterbury’s Ariki was fifth and North Auckland’s Davina was the only other boat to finish. Southland and Stewart Island withdrew in the final round after tailing the fleet. No race was sailed in the afternoon.
