AMERICAN FISH EXPEDITION

ARRIVAL IN DOMINION RESEARCH WORK IN VIEW (P.A.) Auckland, Jan. 29“The fishing here is the finest I have seen anywhere in the world," said Mr. Wendall W. Anderson, of Detroit, Michigan, a big game fisherman, when he arrived at Auckland from San Francisco by Pan-American Airways clipper to lead Yale University’s fish research expedition in New Zealand. With Mr. were othei deep-sea fishermen in the expedition. Messrs L. Baldridge and F. Holliday, who were accompanied bv their wives, and Mr. Ernest King. The party will leave tomorrow for the expedition's headquarters at Otehei Bay, Bay of Islands. Mr. Anderson, who arrived with his wife and son, said the expedition had two main objects. One was to collect material for the Peabody Museum in Newhaven, which was at present holding an exhibition of land mammals. It was hoped that the exhibits collected in New Zealand waters would assist in preparing a comprehensive display of the world’s fish. The exhibits from New Zealand would consist mainly of plaster models of fish, which would be made by the expedition’s taxidermist, Mr. R. G. Migdalski, who arrived a week ago. The second purpose of the visit was to obtain sclentlfle Information for Yale University, said Mr. Anderson. The expedition’s scientist, Mr. J. E. Morrow, who arrived with Mr. Migdalski, had brought 26 cases of equipment from America. He would make a study of the breeding, spawning and feeding habits of the fish, and he would also collect data on sea parasites and the temperatures of fish and the water in which they were caught. Most of the fishing will be done tn the Bav of Islands, but other waters may be visited. The expedition, however, will not concentrate entirely on deep-sea fishing. Mr. William Sidlev. a fly fisherman from Wyoming, will join the party shortly, and he will fish for trout. The expedition will remain in New Zealand until March 8.
