AUSTRALIA HAS NOT YET CONSIDERED ALTERING EXCHANGE

Recd. 7.50 p.m. Canberra, Jan. 29. No consideration has yet been given to an alteration of the exchange rate between the Australian pound and sterling, according to the Prime Minister (Mr. Chifley). He added that no consideration would be given while sterling remained at its present value. The official view is that if the double franc operates and operates badly it will be difficult to hold sterling at its present level. If sterling altered in value the whole matter would have to be considered.
